Avez-vous déjà remarqué qu'à bord de certains autobus (ou devrais-je dire autocar?), on trouve deux boutons: un pour demander l'arrêt, libellé «STOP» (tiens pas de loi 101 ici) et un autre, illustré de la silhouette stylisée d'une femme habillé d'un uniforme de type tailleur, probablement pour représenter une agente de bord. Il y a évidemment un aspect sexiste à cette affaire. Mais également, a-t-on jamais vu d'agentEs de bord dans les autobus au Québec dans les dernières disons 40 années ? Est-ce seulement l'inertie des sociétés de fabrication d'autobus ?

Au printemps 2007, Randall Munroe, le créateur de la bande-dessinée XKCD créa une carte façon Tolkien représentant les communautés virtuelles du web : Online Communities.

Dans le bas de la carte, une légende explicant la carte :
On y trouve entre autre la mention «Do not use for navigation», en français, «Ne pas utiliser pour la navigation».

Mais dans ma tête, je me suis dit, pourquoi ne pas l'utiliser justement pour ça.

En HTML, il est possible de coller des liens aux endroits désirés d'une image, ce qui permet par exemple de créer des «cartes» qui permettent de se promener dans un site web, bien que ça soit de moins en moins utilisé.

Cette hiver, par une nuit froide de décembre je décidai de m'y attaquer. Ce fut plus long que je pensais, mais le résultat est plutôt amusant.

I/O Brush is a new drawing tool to explore colors, textures, and movements found in everyday materials by "picking up" and drawing with them. I/O Brush looks like a regular physical paintbrush but has a small video camera with lights and touch sensors embedded inside. Outside of the drawing canvas, the brush can pick up color, texture, and movement of a brushed surface. On the canvas, artists can draw with the special "ink" they just picked up from their immediate environment.
Most drawing tools/pens we use today allow only a one-way flow of ink, and we are oblivious to how the content of the tool came to exist inside. What if we could not only have control over the outflow of the ink, but also have influence on what goes inside?

We bring back this tradition of a drawing tool as both an input and output device, but instead of picking up the liquid ink, I/O Brush lifts up and captures photons.

banned in three states and is being recalled by its Melbourne

The toy is produced by Melbourne company Moose and won this

Bindeez consists of colourful craft beads that are joined together
to create designs. They are sprayed with water to fix them.

The company yesterday ordered a nationwide recall of the
Chinese-made product, saying a chemical had been substituted
without the company's knowledge. The toy contains beads that have
been found to contain a chemical that the body metabolises into
gamma-hydroxy butyrate (GHB), also known as "grievous bodily harm".

Neither was poison, according to a zoological SWAT team which investigated, due to the sheer quantity required. Instead, they suggested a "a metal-lined wall with an overhanging lip". It seems to have done the trick, since "the creatures can instead be seen in their thousands crawling around the wall every night", as the Telegraph puts it.

Where the millipedes come from zoologists are unable to say, but they've been making their annual pilgrimage for yonks. Back in 1900, they brought the local rail network to a standstill by invading the tracks, thereby preventing trains' wheels from gripping*. ®

The US has lost its position as the world's primary engine of technology innovation, according to a report by the World Economic Forum.

Singapore was among the nations ranked higher than the US

The US is now ranked seventh in the body's league table measuring the impact of technology on the development of nations.

A deterioration of the political and regulatory environment in the US prompted the fall, the report said.

The top spot went for the first time to Denmark, followed by Sweden.

Countries were judged on the integration of technology in business, the infrastructure available, government policy favourable for fostering a culture of innovation and progress and leadership in promoting the usage of the latest information technology tools.

Like other fuel cells, the sugar battery contains enzymes that convert fuel — in this case, sugar — into electricity, leaving behind water as a main byproduct. But unlike other fuel cells, all of the materials used to build the sugar battery are biodegradable.

For consumers, that could mean significantly longer time to talk and play music between charges. The new battery, which is also biodegradable, could eventually replace lithium ion batteries in many portable electronic applications, including computers, the scientists say. Their findings were described today at the 233rd national meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Researchers at Saint Louis University in Missouri have developed a fuel cell battery that runs on virtually any sugar source — from soft drinks to tree sap — and has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium ion batteries, they say.

The Internet offers wide appeal to people with disabilities. But many of those same people find it frustrating or impossible to use a handheld mouse. Software developed at the University of Washington provides an alternative using the oldest and most versatile mode of communication: the human voice.

Vocal Joystick detects sounds 100 times a second and instantaneously turns that sound into movement on the screen. Different vowel sounds dictate the direction: "ah," "ee," "aw" and "oo" and other sounds move the cursor one of eight directions. Users can transition smoothly from one vowel to another, and louder sounds make the cursor move faster. The sounds "k" and "ch" simulate clicking and releasing the mouse buttons.

"A lot of people ask: 'Why don't you just use speech recognition?'" Bilmes said. "It would be very slow to move a cursor using discrete commands like 'move right' or 'go faster.' The voice, however, is able to do continuous commands quickly and easily."
